The Scoop: Cameron Dallas’ Record Deal and His Social Media Strategy

By Sofia Celeste 05 July 2018

MILAN, ITALY - The screaming pack of girls gathered once again in Milan to welcome Cameron Dallas, who walked Dolce & Gabbana’s spring summer mens show in Italy’s fashion capital - dressed in silky satin, like a king.

The 23 year old social media sensation with an Instagram following of over 20 million milled about backstage dressed in a black robe, with pins in his hair gearing up for the brand's DNA Evolution show. The young star who rocketed to stardom with his Vine and YouTube posts, confirmed to Fairplay that he signed a hotly anticipated recording contract with Columbia Records. Dallas has previously released a songs like “She Bad” back in 2015, and was featured on Daniel Skye‘s song “All I Want”. A recently released Netflix documentary "Chasing Cameron" revealed the challenges behind the social media influencer world. On a more personal note, Dallas also shared what he thinks about sharing too much.

Dallas opened up to our editor Sofia Celeste about what’s next:

You’ve been a big part of Dolce & Gabbana’s campaign that’s all about family, inclusion and the importance of social media stars. It’s been a huge success – how do feel about this whole shift in which non-models, normal people like you are rocking the runway?

I think it’s great, I’m really grateful. The best part is being allowed to do all this. Yeah, I’m just really grateful.

You’re so young. But somehow you have found the secret sauce in garnering millions of followers with your candid acts and cute selfies. What advice do you have to give to people who are younger than you – who are on social media trying to make it?

Just keep up with your content. That’s what it’s really about and make sure you care otherwise it just won’t work.

Your hip hop vibe is making the young girls go wild. Can you confirm you signed a record deal?

Yep, signed with Columbia Records.

Are going to start recording soon?

We’re finishing up an album right now. But I should start working on a single real soon. I’ve been working on music for the last two or three years so that’s why I got the record label deal. They heard my music and they really liked it. Right now we’re just working on the video and ad campaign for the first single.

What is the inspiration behind the song? Can you give us some hints?

There’s lots of inspiration – I pull from all over the place. A lot of it is like diving down and getting to know how I really feel - being able to speak with other writers in the room and talk about how I feel and being able to project that in words and in rhythm. It’s great, I love music.

Your social media page is very personal, there are pics of you with your sister on her wedding day, adorable pics of your mom and your grandma.. how do you feel about putting so much of yourself out in public?

It’s cool but I’ve kind of taken a couple of steps back over the last year because I’ve been focusing on music so much and that’s what I want to transition into. I do want to close it off a little, but at the same time I want to make sure I still focus on certain parts [of my personal life] and certain things.
